If you are single and Valentine’s Day is fast approaching does your Valentine’s Day forecast look like it’s going to be a lonely and cloudy holiday?
Don’t despair.
You can make your Valentine’s Day for senior singles the best ever.
Let’s start off by facing the facts.
The continual parade of cupid’s day advertising with happy couples giving romantic gifts both large and small would make one believe that they are an odd-ball for having no date. The truth is the there are 101 million adult singles in the U.S. alone, so you are far from being the only one.
So, you maybe flying solo, romantically speaking, but there are plenty of others that are in the same ‘Loveless Boat’.
Here’s the deal, don’t surrender to a host of self pitying feelings and start to feel sorry for yourself because you are without a date on Valentine’s Day.
To have your best Valentine’s Day best ever, you need a plan and you need to put that plan into place about two weeks before February 14th.
What do I suggest for this Valentine’s Day?
Keep The Media At Bay
Start out with a media black out on February 1st or earlier. The trigger for the start date of your media fast will be as soon as you start to see the first salvo fired in the Valentine’s Day advertising wars.
You know what I’m talking about, it’s the jewelry store commercial the says something like, “Every Kiss Begins With Kay’s” or the greeting card company that is pitching, “When You Care Enough To Send The Very Best” or the flower vendor spot that proclaims, “Say it with flowers” or DeBeers proudly proclaiming, “A Diamond Is Forever”.
You get the picture.
In fact, according to Texas A&M University’s Digital Library “A conservative estimate has the average American consumer exposed to more than 850 commercial messages a day.”
I would have to safely say that there are probably more ads being paid for in the days leading up to Valentine’s Day than your average day of advertising for the year.
What do you do instead of watching TV, reading newspapers and magazines or listening to the radio?
I know, it does sound kind of extreme, but trust me. You’ll be glad you did.
Just try it out, call it an experiment.
Rather than listening to the radio at home or in your car, put together a collection of your favorite CD’s or create a new playlist for your iPod. Treat yourself with some new tunes or buy a CD that you’ve been wanting to listen to.
You could even immerse yourself in a self improvement series with the likes of Tony Robbins, “Personal Power Program” or Eckhart Tolle’s, “A New Earth” “The Power of Now” audio books or Wayne Dyer’s “The Power of Intention” or “How To Get What You Really, Really, Really, Really Want” CD programs.
As an alternative to watching television, keep it off completely or record your favorite shows in advance and skip the commercials on the replay.
Another idea would be to go to Blockbuster Video or Netflix and buy or rent a bunch of your favorite movies or TV shows on DVD. Choose movies that are inspiring, uplifting or have some special meaning for you.
Rather than read a newspaper, find a great book to read. Go online to Amazon.com or to the local Barnes & Noble or if funds are a little tight check out the public library.
There is nothing like a great book to magically transport you mentally and emotionally to another place.
Get Creative With Your Hands
If you’d like to do something else oth
er than read books, listen to music or watch movies, get active. Do something with your hands that is creative.
You could make a bunch of homemade Valentine’s cards to give to friends, family and coworkers. Remember to save a few cards for you, that’s right make some Valentine’s for you to send to yourself.
Better yet, 3 – 4 days before Valentine’s, mail them to your office and home so that you’ve ‘got mail’ when Valentine’s arrives.
Pamper Yourself On Cupid’s Special Day
Another thing that you could do, is to plan to pamper yourself on Cupid’s special day. May be even get a new hair style or new color.
Try getting a manicure or pedicure or better yet, indulge yourself with both.
How about enjoying a massage to really get into the mood of relaxation and to be in the moment of appreciating yourself as a person of value.
If you want to save money, create your own ‘spa experience’ at home. Set up your bathroom with wonderful mood music, Michael Bublé or John Legend are some of my favorites. Decorate the bathroom with candles and flowers and take a relaxing hot bath with fragrant bath salts or scented bath oils.
In summary, develop a Valentine’s Day plan in advance. Put the plan in action early, ideally on February 1st or earlier. Become your own get friend and best Valentine! Say no to the media drone of constant Valentine’s Day advertising.
Listen to good music, watch an inspiring movie or read a good book. Do something creative with your hands. Give to yourself, buy something special just for you. Pamper yourself and allow yourself to enjoy every minute of it.
If you only do a fraction of what I’m suggesting here, there is no doubt in my mind that you will have the very best Valentine’s Day for senior singles ever!
Happy Valentine’s Day
With Love,
Suzy Weiss
